Description as a Tool in Narrative Craft: The Novel in Perspective

Abstract

A key function of the novel is to give pleasure. In trying to achieve this, a narrator employs multiple narrative skills, with description as a powerful tool at his or her disposal. Description, not the adjunction of a few adjectives but the extravagant representation of people, places, objects and situations, is used mainly to enhance the esthetic qualities of a story. This lets the reader vividly see, hear, feel, smell or taste what the narrator really intends him or her to do and this paper has proved that the skillful narrator works on as many senses to produce specific effects. In this study also, a chapter of an unpublished novel “A visit to the Wli Waterfall” has been created to show how the narrator manipulates the five senses of the reader to achieve his or her aim. It finds that, mostly used is the appeal to visualize, followed by hearing, touch, smell and taste.
